Painting a mountain scene using textures

I have always loved bright colours and textures, so I incorporate them in my mixed media work. I am constantly experimenting, and particularly like the effects you can get when using textured wallpaper for both collage and printing.

You will need:

Acrylics: yellow ochre; titanium white; Prussian blue; violet; process magenta

Pencils/pens: water-resistant pen

Brush: flat

Paper/support: rough watercolour stretched onto board

Other: gesso; textured wallpaper; corrugated cardboard; mounting card off-cuts; white tissue paper; PVA glue mixture of 2 parts glue to 1 part water

1. Sketch the scene using the water-resistant pen. Next use glue to stick the collage materials – textured wallpaper, corrugated cardboard, off-cuts of mounting card and tissue paper – to the surface, following the lines of the mountain edges. Scrunch the tissue up before you apply it over the glue, stippling with the brush to encourage the creases; use mainly for the cloud areas.
